CPL 2.0 TWITTER

I have never really been interested in Twitter and after having a look at the site I know I won't be using it. As far as I can tell the Library tweets are mostly related to programming which is already included on our website. There is too much irrelevant conversation taking place on the internet and not enough 'face to face' interaction. (Of course I don't know one young person who would agree with me!).

"Tweet Tweet"

CPL 2.0 LIBRARYTHING

I found this site very easy to navigate and I did manage to set up an account. I used both Amazon and Library of Congress to add books to my library. My daughter will also be using LibraryThing; she wonders why we didn't discover it earlier! We think it's great.

CPL 2.0 ONLINE PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

OK, now I'm rushing to beat the deadline!
It's all about Google's stranglehold on the 'net! I had a look at Google Calendar and Google Docs (and heard lots of discussion about both at work!). Being the 'paper in hand' person that I am, the online calendar is just not for me. I need the visual cues on my wall or desk. It would be fun to do both but....no time! Google Docs looks like a useful tool especially for collaborating online and for people who have not purchased Microsoft Office. I could use this when planning an event with friends or family although I might worry about how secure the documents were. I would probably recommend it to library computer users.

CPL 2.0 FLICKR & YOUTUBE

I have to admit that the only time I usually watch anything on Youtube is when someone sends me an email with a 'tube' attachment. HOWEVER--I do search out the wedding video (JK Wedding Entrance Dance) if I need a 'feel-good' moment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0
It always makes me smile and feel like dancing (but not at work of course!).
I viewed part of the Did You Know 4.0 video re newspapers etc. I LOVE MY SATURDAY GLOBE & MAIL TO HAVE & TO HOLD AT MY KITCHEN TABLE ALL WEEK!

I use Picasa for my photos so haven't really considered using Flickr. After viewing the 'tour' I think I would probably just stick with Picasa as the features seem very similar.

CPL 2.0 RSS

Creating the Bloglines account seemed to be easy enough. "Really Simple Syndication" or RSS is an intriguing tool and I've always wondered what that little orange square was on some sites. I did set up a few feeds which are mostly news sites and one for 'Rotten Tomatoes'. It's important to remember to copy the URL for the actual RSS though and not just the website URL. (A few colleagues and I discovered this after we thought we had successfully set up our links). I can see that it could be convenient for some people and I'm glad I found out about it but I really prefer to go to the actual 'news' site rather than rely on the 'feeds' in Bloglines.

CPL 2.0 GOOGLE UNIVERSE

I had downloaded Google Earth on my home computer quite awhile ago but hadn't used it until this assignment. With Iceland being in the news lately I thought I'd have a look at the island and found this photo of a beautiful waterfall. The problem with a few of these Google products is that we aren't able to download them to the CPL computers. I use Picasa for photos and have had a look at other products like YouTube, Maps, Books and Docs.

CPL 2.0 SOCIAL NETWORKING (FACEBOOK)

"Social networking sites allow users to connect with friends online. The most popular sites are Facebook and MySpace."

"For you, is Facebook useful or a time-waster?"

Facebook would be useful for me to be able to connect with my kids and view the photos they post. I think it could be a big time-waster for group activities such as Mafia Wars and Farmville. I prefer to just stay in touch with friends via telephone or email; Picasa is a good site for photo-sharing.

CPL 2.0 WIKIPEDIA

"A wiki is a website that’s developed collaboratively by a group of users. It can be edited by anyone. The most well-known wiki is Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org)."

"How easy or difficult was it to find articles that needed editing? Were the errors you found factual or grammar / spelling?"

I find Wikipedia very simple to use but am more skeptical now about the accuracy of information in the articles now that I know how easily it can be edited! I found an article on bird banding and being an avid proofreader I thought I might find some errors but couldn't come up with any. However I succeeded in adding an external link to the page.
Has anyone figured out how to insert a photo and/or graphic into a Wikipedia article?

CPL 2.0 DELICIOUS

"Delicious (http://delicious.com/) is a “social bookmarking” site. Basically, social bookmarking is the process of tagging, organizing, and sharing content on the Internet."

"How comfortable are you using Best Websites after this practice? Do you have any tips for using Best Websites on Delicious?"

A few years ago I was very comfortable using Best Websites but I must admit I don't find Delicious as user-friendly and do not use it very often. I would probably be using it more if I worked on Central 3rd Floor! I like the concept of easy access from any computer in the universe but the site is a bit overwhelming with its hundreds of tags and bundles. I clicked on Tags > Explore and was lost in a cloud of Delicious exploration! Of course I realized later that I was outside the realm of CPL 2.0 tags but did find some interesting information on creating photography books. I investigated the PC Tutorials bundle on CPL Best Websites later and now have a better idea of how the tagging works.

CPL 2.0

I am most intrigued by the items I know very little about:

Google Universe
RSS
Library Thing
Online Productivity Tools

I'm just hoping that I can keep up with all of it!
The one aspect of the social networking part that I'm concerned about is the "identity theft" problem. I noticed an article on the AMA website where a police officer was discussing this and he said he would never have a Facebook account. I'm not concerned for myself but all the customers we will be assisting!
Somewhat related to this topic, I have a book on hold titled "You Are Not a Gadget: a Manifesto" by Jaron Lanier.

Thanks for giving us this learning oppportunity!
